Others have decided to start from scratch and custom builds are exploding. The industry is now overwhelmed and so are the homeowners trying to navigate through these projects. They are looking for help, and with your expertise - you can guide them. Learn about key issues for lawyers to help clients navigate the home renovation.

Speakers

Raymond G. Leclair

Ray Leclair joined LAWPRO in 2008 in the role of Vice President, TitlePLUS. In 2012, he became Vice President, Public Affairs, responsible for government relations efforts at LAWPRO.

Formerly General Counsel for the Kanata Research Park Corporation, a development company and major commercial landlord in Ottawa, Ray has practised in both major national law firms and as a sole practitioner, and was a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa Law School and Cité Collégiale. He also served for 15 years as the Ottawa senior instructor for the French and English Real Estate Sections of the Bar Admission Course and member of the Law Society of Ontario’s Solicitor Advisory Group, Licensing Process.

Called to the bar in 1984, Ray is an active member in numerous associations in various capacities, such as: the National Real Property Section of the Canadian Bar Association; the Real Property Section of the Ontario Bar Association; the Working Group on Lawyers & Real Estate; the Ontario Real Estate Lawyers Association (ORELA). He is a former member of the Ontario Bar Association Council, CBA’s National Sections Council, the North American Bar-related® Title Insurers, and the Advisory Committee for the Cité Collégiale Legal Assistants Program. Ray also volunteered as Manager of the fundraiser TOM* MensFashion4Hope and a VIP & Sponsor Relations Officer for semi-annual Toronto Men’s Fashion Week (TOM*).

Ray is a frequent speaker/presenter, in French or English, in numerous programs on various real estate and other law related topics in Canada and the United States.

Shawna Ramsay

Shawna Ramsay is a National Consultant with TitlePLUS title insurance. She began her career in real estate working on the Teranet property conversion project and then as a real estate clerk. She joined the TitlePLUS department of LAWPRO over 15 years ago.

Shawna regularly attends one on one meetings to discuss TitlePLUS coverage, underwriting requirements, and processes. She enjoys digging into a real estate file and providing guidance on how title insurance might be able to help. She has written several papers and given various presentations on behalf of TitlePLUS to assist lawyers and clerks with their continuing education.

Shawna is also a mother of two teenage boys, and she has spent much of her personal time volunteering for different sporting associations. She lives in Ottawa, loves to travel, and enjoys spending the summer months on the water and those cold Ottawa winters snowmobiling.

Mahwash Khan

Mahwash is Communications Counsel in the Claims Prevention & Stakeholder Relations department at LAWPRO, and Chair of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Group. She has a Certificate in Leadership and Inclusion, and is working towards a Certificate in Adult Learning and Development.

Mahwash grew up in nine countries on five continents. She is an internationally trained lawyer (UK) and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2003. She practised real estate and family law prior to joining LAWPRO. She is a member of the Ontario Bar Association, South Asian Bar Association and Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers. Mahwash has given various presentations on real estate law as well as diversity and inclusion.

Mahwash's race is human. She believes in being different together and loves talking about equity, diversity and inclusion - a popular topic at the dinner table with her husband and three teenagers. Her pronouns are she/her/hers.
