2023 TLA AWARD OF DISTINCTION RECIPIENT
Chris Paliare

Chris Paliare to receive the Toronto Lawyers Association Award of Distinction on March 2, 2023 in The Carlu Round Room at 6:00 p.m.

The Toronto Lawyers Association’s Award of Distinction is awarded each year to a Toronto lawyer who has a demonstrated record of excellence, and who has made an extraordinary contribution to the integrity and worth of the law and to the legal profession.

We are pleased to announce that Chris Paliare O.Ont., LSM, LL.B., LL.M., Partner at Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein Barristers LLP, Toronto will be the recipient of this prestigious award for 2023.

The Award will be bestowed on him at the TLA’s annual Awards Gala to be held on March 2, 2023 in The Carlu Round Room at 444 Yonge Street.

Chris Paliare is a pioneer in boutique litigation. His unique combination of sophisticated legal skills, strategic instincts, and creativity has earned him recognition as one of the top litigators in the country.

He is quick to state that he never dreamed he would become a trial lawyer. His awareness of, and desire to help others, began when working at his father’s diner. He admired the way he interacted with people and his willingness to give a hungry person a bowl of soup and a sandwich.

As an inner-city kid, he and six other family members lived in a small house at Eastern and Pape. He quickly learned the importance of giving back and helping those less fortunate.

While finding his way in law, he was honouring his Macedonian heritage as a lawyer serving Macedonian Place, a home for Macedonian senior citizens, which evolved into a 45-year engagement that he stills enjoys today.

Chris represented the Macedonian Human Rights Association at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Moscow in 1991 to advocate for Macedonians whose human rights were being violated in Greece. He also went to Helsinki and Warsaw to persuade other nations under the Helsinki Accord to acknowledge Macedonian basic human rights in Greece, which were unrecognized by the Greek government.

Chris Paliare’s practice covers all aspects of counsel work, including complex corporate and commercial litigation, securities litigation, class actions, administrative law, public law, Charter of Rights and constitutional law litigation, employment law, pension litigation, and white collar crime.

He has appeared before numerous administrative tribunals as well as at every level of trial and appellate court in the Province of Ontario, and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Acting on behalf of professionals who have come into conflict with their regulatory agencies, Chris regularly appears before the Divisional Court, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, and before disciplinary bodies.

He is a frequent lecturer and speaker before professional industry groups on the impact of litigation trends and employment and labour issues.

On July 4, 2017, the Ontario Court of Appeal released its decision in Angus v. Municipality of Port Hope, 2017 ONCA 566, which reviews key principles in determining whether obligations are pursuant to contract or trust. Chris, Richard Stephenson, and Lindsay Scott successfully represented the Municipality of Port Hope as appellant.
