Appellate Mooting Program
We are excited to launch a new program offering lawyers with a civil appeal scheduled before the Court of Appeal for Ontario (CAO) the invaluable opportunity to moot their oral submissions before an experienced panel of appellate counsel and former CAO judges.
Spearheaded by The Honourable David Brown, this program is the first of its kind in Ontario, and is available only to TLA members.
As we anticipate significant demand, priority will be given to counsel making their first or second appearance at the CAO, and those under ten years of call.
Program Details
- Cost: This program is offered at no cost to current members of the TLA. Membership is only $199 a year.
- Who It’s For: Appellants’ counsel in civil or family appeals with a scheduled CAO hearing.
- Timing: You can apply as soon as: i) the hearing is scheduled; and, ii) the Respondent's materials have been served. Moots will take place 2–3 weeks before the appeal.
- Format: Most moots are held in person at the TLA offices (361 University Avenue); virtual options are available.
- Duration: Each session lasts 90–120 minutes, including detailed feedback from the panel.
- Panel: Our roster of volunteer panelists consists of former CAO judges and veteran appellate litigators. Each moot will be heard by a panel of at least two.
- Confidentiality: All moots take place under the Chatham House Rule. Panelists will not discuss the content of the moot prior to the CAO hearing.
