Come and listen to our expert panelists candidly discuss and de-mystify the judicial application and appointment process. Hear how you can navigate this process for the Ontario Court of Justice, Superior Court of Justice and Federal Court of Canada. The current chair of the JAAC, Fareed Amin will be able to address the recent changes announced by the Ontario Government regarding the OCJ . This unique program will address such topics as:

  • What are the most critical selection criteria?
  • How can you stand out?
  • When in your career should you apply?
  • How does the selection process ensure appointment of a diverse range of candidates?
  • How important are references?
  • Will past indiscretions come back to bite you?
  • Can a non-litigation lawyer be appointed?

  • Fareed Amin, Chair of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee for the Ontario Court of Justice (JAAC)
    Fareed Amin currently serves as the CAO, Town of Collingwood. Mr. Amin worked in the public service in Ontario at the provincial and municipal levels for more than 25 years. During his tenure with the Ontario Public Service, Mr. Amin served as the Deputy Minister with the following ministries: Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; Energy and Infrastructure; Municipal Affairs and Housing; Consumer Services; Economic Development and Trade; Citizenship and Immigration and the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs. Mr. Amin also worked as the Assistant Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Finance. At the municipal level, Mr. Amin was the Deputy City Manager at the City of Toronto. Mr. Amin is a member of a number of not-for-profit and charitable organizations. He is on the Executive Committee of Lifeline Syria and the President of the Islamic Institute of Toronto. Mr. Amin serves on the Board of Governors for Seneca College and the University of Toronto (Scarborough Campus). Mr. Amin has an undergraduate degree in Applied Geography and Planning from the University of Guyana; a Certificate in Public Administration from the University of Toronto; a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Queen’s University in Kingston and a Certificate in Leadership from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.

  • Cheryl Goldhart, President, Goldhart & Associates; Member of the Federal Judicial Advisory Committee for Ontario - GTA
    Cheryl Goldhart is certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada and has practiced exclusively in the area of family law for more than 30 years. She specializes in negotiating complex agreements encompassing all areas of family law and litigates in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Justice, and the Court of Appeal. She is also an accomplished OAFM accredited family mediator and a certified family law arbitrator by the ADR Institute of Ontario. She is also a fellow with the International Academy of Family Lawyers. Cheryl is the Chair of the Dispute Resolution Officer Committee in Toronto and has worked as a Dispute Resolution Officer at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice since its inception more than 20 years ago. She is a member of the Bench and Bar Committee of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Toronto) and was a director of the Board of the Advocates’ Society. Cheryl has served as the Chair of the Ontario Bar Association, Family Law Executive, and a past member of the Canadian Bar Association (Federal), Family Law Executive. Cheryl is a frequent lecturer on various topics in family law. Over her years of practice, Cheryl has written numerous articles for the Bar Admission Course, professional journals, periodicals and magazines. Cheryl is the only family lawyer in Ontario to be awarded the Lexpert Zenith Award. She has certified as a “Best Lawyer in Canada” for family law since 2008. In 2016, Cheryl was awarded the OBA Award for Excellence in Family Law. In 2019, Cheryl was appointed to the Judicial Appointments Committee by the Federal Government.

  • Frank Walwyn,Partner, WeirFoulds LLP; former Member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee for the Ontario Court of Justice (JAAC)
    Frank Walwyn is a commercial litigation partner at WeirFoulds LLP in Toronto with a multi-jurisdictional practice that focuses on high-stakes business disputes. He is licensed to practise law in Canada and in a number of Caribbean countries. Frank litigates a wide range of cases including challenges to restraint orders made pursuant to criminal Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties, multi-jurisdictional corporate disputes, and complex offshore trusts and estates litigation. Frank is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been named one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer. He is well-known for giving back to his community. Frank participates on many legal and community boards and initiatives and is a frequent presenter and skills trainer at continuing professional development programs on various legal topics. Frank has been recognized often for his significant contributions and dedication to the profession and the community including as a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), the Ontario Bar Association Award for Distinguished Service (2016), and a 2016 Lexpert Zenith Award as a champion of diversity and inclusion. In 2019, Frank received a Law Society Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the Law Society of Ontario.

    Christina Porretta is the General Counsel for BDO Canada LLP. In this role, Christina is responsible for leading the legal and compliance function in Canada, including litigation, regulatory compliance, governance, contracts, and employment-related issues. As a member of the National Leadership team, she manages all legal affairs and provides strategic legal advice to senior leaders on a full range of matters. Before joining BDO, Christina was a partner in the Advisory Research Group at a global law firm, where she provided opinions on complex and novel legal issues on matters involving contractual or statutory interpretation, arbitration disputes, class actions and numerous other corporate and commercial matters.
