Brian H. Greenspan to be honoured with the Toronto Lawyers’ Association Award of Distinction on March 5, 2020 in Toronto
The Toronto Lawyers Association’s Award of Distinction is awarded each year to a Toronto lawyer who has a demonstrated record of excellence, and who has made an extraordinary contribution to the integrity and worth of the law and to the legal profession.
We are delighted to announce that Brian H. Greenspan will be the recipient of this prestigious award for 2020. The Award will be bestowed on Mr. Greenspan at the TLA’s annual Awards Gala to be held on March 5, at 6:00 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom in The Omni King Edward Hotel.
Brian Greenspan is one of the most prominent and highly regarded criminal defence lawyers in Canada. He has served as counsel on many of Canada’s most significant cases that have helped shape criminal law over the last four decades. He has earned an unparalleled and distinguished reputation in both trial and appellate law.
“Brian Greenspan’s remarkable contribution to the practice of law is universally acknowledged. He is recognized throughout Canada and internationally as an elite criminal defence lawyer.” said Margaret Waddell, TLA Board President.
“His passion and knowledge of the criminal justice system inspires students, recently called, and established lawyers alike. Mr. Greenspan demonstrates the high professional standards to which we commit in our profession,” she added. He lectures extensively as a keynote speaker and panelist at criminal law continuing education programs across Canada.
Mr. Greenspan received his B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1968 and his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1971. He received his LL.M. from the London School of Economics in 1972. After being called to the Bar in 1974, Mr. Greenspan taught the Administration of Criminal Justice course at Osgoode Hall Law School from 1977 to 1984 and was a special lecturer in Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto Law School from 1984 to 1998.
Brian Greenspan is a senior partner in the Toronto firm Greenspan, Humphrey, Weinstein. He was President of the Criminal Lawyers' Association (Ontario) from 1989 to 1993 and was the founding Chair of the Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers from 1992 to 1996. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers. A compelling speaker, he was awarded the Douglas K. Laidlaw Medal for excellence in oral advocacy in 2002 and received the G. Arthur Martin Medal for contributions to criminal justice in Canada in 2010. In 2012, he was recognized by the Law Society of Upper Canada with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. In 2013, he was awarded the Alumni Gold Key for Achievement by Osgoode Hall; received the "Key to the City" of his hometown, Niagara Falls, Ontario; and was selected as an "Alumni of Influence" by University College of the University of Toronto. Greenspan is a member of the Board of Directors of Innocence Canada. He has been recognized in The International Who's Who of Business Crime Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in Canada since their inception and is a Band 1 leading individual in White Collar Crime in Chambers Canada. His prominence in Canada’s legal universe is well confirmed, as he has been named three times as one of the 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Mr. Greenspan is sought after for his sage advice relating to international cross border investigations and criminal trial and appellate matters.
