This year, our popular annual event for Licensing and Articling Candidates returns online for a 3-part web replay series.

Part 1: Lawyers Telling It Like It Is: What, How and Why

Mary Paterson, Partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt will discuss what she looks for when working with a licensing or articling candidate. Jennifer Arduini, Associate Lawyer at Dutton Brock, will talk about what you can do to make yourself indispensable. These 2 speakers will cover a variety of topics including communication, collaboration, managing expectations, work habits, and networking.

Speakers:

  • Mary Paterson, Partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt
    Mary was ranked as a 2020 Benchmark Litigation 40 & Under Hot List; 2019 Lexpert Rising Star; and an Acritas 2018 Star Lawyer. Mary’s commercial litigation practice focuses on tax litigation, contract disputes and other general commercial litigation, and assisting stakeholders in receiverships, bankruptcies and proceedings pursuant to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Mary has appeared in the Ontario, Federal, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia Courts of Appeal; the Ontario Divisional Court; the Tax Court of Canada; the Federal Court of Canada; and the superior courts of Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador.

    Before joining Osler, Mary clerked at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Mary worked to establish several pro bono programs within the firm and has appeared in the Court of Appeal on a pro bono basis numerous times. She won a 2011 Lexpert Zenith Award for her work assisting a UN employee obtain a widower’s benefit after his same-sex partner died while working for the UN.

  • Jennifer Arduini, Associate Lawyer at Dutton Brock
    Jennifer articled with Dutton Brock before joining the firm as an associate in 2012. She maintains a broad insurance defence practice with particular focus on motor vehicle accident litigation, occupiers' liability, property damage disputes, product liability, prescription error claims, subrogation matters and general negligence claims. Jennifer has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario. Jennifer is a Director of the Toronto Lawyers Association. She is also the Chair of the TLA's Young Lawyers Committee and she serves as a member of the TLA's Sponsorship Committee. She is also a member of her firm’s Articling Committee.

Ray Leclair, VP of Public Affairs at LawPRO will speak on Practice Management. 

Part 3: Legal research

Joan Rataic-Lang, Executive Director/Library Director at the TLA’s Court House Library will cover the methodology of legal research. Linda Zardo, Reference Librarian, will set out the best sources of free research and explain how to research quickly, efficiently and exhaustively.
